The Neuroradiologist’s Surprise

“I was scared of back surgery. I went to Brazil instead.”
I carefully regarded this man sitting across the desk from me
…this doctor studying my latest scan.

I wasn’t at all prepared for a neuroradiologist to say this.
The very next words out of his mouth were the confirmation I needed to buy the ticket.

“You’ve not been successful with any surgical attempts.
Please seriously consider this alternative route.”

I walked out of his office shocked and amazed.
Several people I knew had been discussing this Brazilian healer. Some had already gone and others were considering.
I had listened…kind of.

Too many people with the same information to disregard. And now, a neuroradiologist?!
I heard clearly and loudly this time in the neuroradiologist’s office.
His story was startling, coincidental and most unexpected.
I went home and made plans to go to Brazil.

Casa Dom Inacio de Loyola near Abadiania is near Brasilia in the central plateau of Brazil  I was one of hundreds of people from around the world standing in lines and sitting in chairs waiting to walk before João de Deus. Our hostel was one mile from the center where everyone gathered. Groups of people walking along the dirt road to the Casa was mind boggling. Dinner conversations at the hostel were always interesting. One meal I sat across from the head of the Vienna School of Osteopathy. We began talking about osteopathy and, from across the table, he told me that I had a major problem with the left side of my face.  And such is the remarkable capacity of some of these doctors.

Sinus infections never recurred after my first trip; a scar from the removal of a basil-cell basil carcinoma on my leg completely disappeared as well. A friend accompanied me on my initial trip; thereafter, I became a seasoned  traveler from Phoenix,  flying into Sao Paulo and taking a taxi into the central plateau and the Casa.  Unfortunately, my fluid and sharp sensations remained with me and stayed with me after my Brazilian travels stopped.

On my second visit, I was sitting at a table with Martin, the first-hand man for João. He was my hostel host and, as there were two of us checking out, he excitedly told us a story about a man who had come through the line that day who had returned after several visits.  He had suffered severe headaches for years; and this time, a piece of bone appeared in the center of his forehead between his eyes. We were both incredulous with his ‘healing tale’ of the day.

I had three unbelievable neuroradiologists working with me. They communicated with each other about my case, hence the referral to the neuroradiologist who had found success in Brazil.

Six weeks after returning home, I expelled a rather large ‘specimen’ from my throat that appeared to be bone.  Before sending this to my oral surgeon for pathology confirmation, I showed it to my neuroradiologist.  He was stunned, saying “I will find out where this bone came from.  This is a large piece of bone!”

My oral surgeon promptly ordered a CT scan.  I was invited  into the neuroradiologist’s  ‘cave’ as he reviewed the film. This wasn’t the first time I had been invited back into the ‘caves’ of my radiologists: I was becoming quite the expert in reading film. As it turns out, he was unable to  determine where the bone originated. Pathology confirmed the specimen ‘viable bone’ (living bone as opposed to ‘dead’ bone.

And this unconventional and unexpected happening remained a mystery as well as a stunning coincidence in September 2004 until the NOW – April 2025.
