The circular incident ten days later on March 24
was in the middle of a rapid spiraling of happenings
that landed in April.

2011 – 2026
….and I end up where I started
I had waited three months for an ENT appointment at Barrows Neurological Institute. In a matter of one hour on March 24, my life was turned into a LARGE circle, dating back to 2011.
In 2011, my ENT was head of the Skull Base Team at Barrows. And I had MR Neurography in Santa Monica with Aaron Filler, MD.
In 2026, I had a referral to an ENT at Barrows who I thought also served in this capacity. And I was waiting for an MR Neurography report from the very same Dr. Filler who I had recently discovered was the creator of MR Neurography in the early 1990’s.
I was eagerly anticipating this appointment since this doctor was not only an Otolaryngologist but also a Neuro-Otologist. I was certain he would be able to discuss the ear/throat connection. The appointment was surprisingly disappointing.
The doctor had my complex 32-page AOC physician history in hand when he walked into the room. No examination of my throat or nose was performed… instead, there was only talk.
He was on target with the observation that I had a ‘palatal drop’. I was hoping to discuss the hamular resection surgery and consequences on the Eustachian tube after many years. As I started talking about this issue, he interrupted me and told me that I knew too much anatomy and was misleading doctors when the ‘real issue’ was the dropped palate.
The Barrows ENT referred me back to AOC Physicians to a doctor who my previous ENT had worked with for many years. Why would my doctor of many years not have referred me to his colleague – this ‘renown laryngologist’, if he had deemed this appropriate? My recent ENT dismissal and his help (through emails, since he is now retired) did NOT suggest this colleague, but instead another physician in the group.
I did discover that this ENT was NOT the head of the Skull Base Team….but I was back at Barrows.
My previous ENT had examined my ‘dropped palate’ immediately after the orthodontic injury/trigger in 1996.
It will be three months for an appointment with this ‘referral laryngologist’ in the practice where I started in 1996.
I am still waiting for the MR Neurography and MRI report of the throat from September 29, 2025!
Do I even bother going to the ‘laryngologist? The earliest available appointment is in three months! I waited in anticipation for the Barrows ENT three months and here is yet another circuitous occurrence with the same timing of three months1
My retired ENT has thankfully been communicating with me and is aware of these events in my ENT life. His comments were precisely what I was thinking as well.
So, June here I come. It’s reassuring to hear the words “he listens well'”. And they both say he’s the ‘best laryngologist in the city’.
“Dr. xxxxxxx is excellent, the best in the city as a laryngologist, focusing on the larynx, but I wouldn’t have thought of him for you.
I certainly would be open to seeing him, as he listens well, and the main thought as I consider your visit with him is whether his speech pathologist might have some therapy suggestions that would help. He will do a scope exam which you could see on the monitor, which might be helpful. Yes, a visit with him might go nowhere, but at least he’d rethink everything with a different set of ears which might be good.”
